Honda e:Ny1 electric SUV – Brief Road Test

The neat and stylish e:Ny1 is a fully electric SUV, with a powerful electric motor (only) which uses a water-cooled battery to ensure consistent power delivery and to help extend battery life. The battery is low-mounted within the vehicle, helping to optimise interior space.

The car is well-equipped and features a 15.1 inch infotainment screen; its operational mode controls are straightforward.

E:progress comes as standard with the e:Ny1; this is an over-the air charging management programme which works with existing home chargers to always use low cost, clean/green electricity at off-peak times. Honda is also offering a special deal for buyers installing a home charger for the first time.

There are two versions; the Elegance (costing from £39,995) and Advance, as test-driven (priced from £42,195). The higher specification Advance features a glass roof, Parking Pilot, an electrically-operated tailgate, a multi-view camera, a heated steering wheel and an upgraded audio system.

On Test

I liked the light, bright, spacious interior of the test car, also appreciating the wide-opening, large doors, providing easy access to comfortable seating that provides good leg and head room for all occupants.

With more than 200 bhp available, the test car, which was easy to drive, accelerated rapidly from standstill and when on the move. The driver has access to different power modes, to suit prevailing driving conditions.

When accelerating, the drivetrain emitted a little noise, reminiscent of a subdued version of the sound of an electric train gathering pace, but actually I liked this sound and didn’t find it intrusive.

I found the large central infotainment screen to be clear and informative; it takes a little time to assimilate all the information on offer, but the modes are easy to operate.

The car provided a comfortable ride quality, and although handling and roadholding capabilities could not be fully assessed during a brief drive, the vehicle felt solid, well-engineered and safe, with positive steering and brakes.

The reverse sensors are welcome and helpful, as rearward visibility is not great through the rear window. There are front parking sensors too.

The e:Ny1 incorporates generous, flat-floored boot space, and the luggage compartment is extendable by folding the rear seats, thus providing nearly triple the capacity.

VERDICT

A spacious, competent and comfortable electric SUV, albeit with a real world driving range of only about 200 miles.
