Reasons People Are Choosing Sports Cars over Luxury Models

6th March 2020

A different perspective: Guest contributor Amanda Jerelyn asks…

Are you planning on buying a new car?

Do you want to upgrade your ride?

Have you always been a sports car fanatic?

If so, then you have reached the right place. Here are some fantastic reasons to finally make up your mind about buying a sports car.

(Kim adds: This article represents Amanda’s own personal views. Please note that some of the links included in this feature are U.S. related, but may also be of interest to U.K. and other Wheels-Alive readers around the world).

According to a recent statistics update, it is estimated that the revenue in the sports car market segment can go up to a significant total of US$25,000 (Amanda, is this figure correct please – it doesn’t sound like enough, and does the figure apply just to the U.S. market?). It shows that people are buying more sports cars than other luxury vehicle types. Given the many positive advantages, a sports car is not something regular people buy just to splurge on, but to move up a notch in their daily drives, as well as fulfilling their desire to have a sports machine.

Eight reasons why people are opting for sports over luxury

Here are eight great reasons to convince you and clear any doubts with regards to getting yourself a sports car rather than any other luxury car type!

1.    Sports cars are also a type of luxury vehicle

Sports cars are a luxury too. Many people cannot afford a brand new, up to the minute model sports car even to this day, and some feel that buying a sports car for regular use is a waste of money. Perhaps they assume it would be dangerous, also an exhaustible resource that would just take space in your garage and won’t be of much use. However, fortunately others, including younger generations, have a different perspective and don’t think like this at all. Getting a sports car might be a luxury but can still be a worthy long-term investment if an educated decision is made – and a car of this type can easily be used for regular driving too. It’s worth mentioning too that if you can’t run to a brand new sports car, there are some very cost-effective buys available among examples a few years old…

2.    They have better performance ratings

Sports cars are designed to handle the road. Therefore, their performance ratings are always a level higher than that of your average SUV, for example. These rides are focused more on enhancing the quality of your drive rather than going for functionality, spaciousness, and other features that are associated with an average vehicle. These features sometimes play an essential role in the buying decision. However, once you get behind the wheel of a competent sports model for a few miles, you might be persuaded that a superior driving experience and the feeling of owning a sports vehicle is what you actually want now.

3.    The value of the car doesn’t drop over time

It is very well known that an average motor car that has been driven high mileages depreciates more in value over time, and as the years go by, the asset value of the vehicle gradually disappears. However, with sports cars, it is different. Generally speaking, quality sports cars tend to hold their value due to their superior build standards and body durability, even after being used extensively. They become classics and collectables over time, sometimes holding even more value price-wise than the figures for which they were initially sold (and in a few cases they can actually appreciate after just a few years!). Therefore, you don’t need to worry about the resale value and can keep your car as an asset. The value of the vehicle won’t significantly drop over time, and its price may remain high enough for you to sell effectively if the time comes.

4.    Increased safety because of design and construction

Sports cars sometimes generate a negative image of not being safe enough for regular use because of their speed potential and other tactile/cosmetic features, but the stereotype for this type of vehicle is beginning to be broken now. People now understand that (for all types of vehicle) speed and dynamic performance generally can be controlled manually as well as thanks to enhanced technological and electronic control systems.

Sports cars are now safer than ever, and in fact, a good budget sports car might be way safer than your average SUV in the way it is designed to perform. This applies to bodywork design and construction as well as technological aspects of the drivetrain and running gear.

5.    Sports car affordability is better than ever

If getting a brand new car is not essential to you and you don’t mind looking into some older and used sports models, then you are good to go. Examples of good sports cars are available within all budget ranges. This helps to offset worries about not having enough funds in your bank account to be able to afford one. Remember too that even an average luxury vehicle, if brand new, would be similarly priced or possibly more expensive.

  • So maybe you don’t need to back down from the sports car life upgrade that you crave?

6.    There are great customisation options

Relative to other car types, sports cars are more open to customisation. People who are into sports cars often prefer to go for a different look, helping to explain why there are many colour options available for the bodywork. Owner’s preference custom choices are also available for the interior, fabric, and engine, so the vehicle can easily be personalised. If you are buying secondhand, and choose carefully, you can benefit from upgrades chosen by a previous owner, at far less cost overall than applicable when the car was new.

7.    They are a representation of your personality

As mentioned above, people who are into sports cars tend to be different. Available customising options give them an excellent area in which to play, to make their vehicle stand out of the crowd on the road. Owners can build in a variety of aspects to make their car noticeable and a close representation of their own personality.

8.    Driving is actually fun

Lastly, driving becomes fun. When behind the wheel of a sports car, driving doesn’t feel like a chore any more, or just a hectic process of commuting from one place to another. You tend to enjoy driving more as the vehicle you have chosen delivers a happier driving and ownership experience – multiplied by many times compared with the average car (even a luxury one!).

Bottom Line

Go and get that sports car… All in all, I hope these eight reasons are more than enough to convince you to upgrade your driving experience and clear your doubts about finally giving in to one of your long time wishes!
