Dave Moss reports…
The DVLA is reminding anyone holding number plates on retention documents or certificates that the first of new regular renewals required under this scheme are now approaching. If it has been ten years since the date of issue of the last certificate or retention document you hold for a personalised registration number, it will probably require renewal in 2025.
Renewal is free, but it is necessary to check an existing document to find the applicable expiry date. The earliest a renewal application can be made is 28 days before the expiry date. However the sting in the tail is – if you don’t renew before the expiry date, entitlement to the registration number will be lost.
Which document to check for details depends on whether the registration number has ever been assigned to a vehicle or not.
If a registration number is held which has never been assigned to a vehicle the V750 document should be consulted. If renewal is necessary, it can be done online using a DVLA personalised registration account if you already have one. If not, an account can be set up at any time, and the certificate added to it.
For registration numbers that have been assigned to a vehicle in the past, but are now on retention, it is necessary to check the V778 retention document, In this case, retention of the the registration number will need to be renewed by by post.
If a personalised registration is currently assigned to a vehicle, no action is needed.
